Alpaca profile: Marius of Moonwood
Out of our entire herd, THIS is the one we are watching with the greatest anticipation!
Although as a breeder you continually hope that your cria are female, occasionally there is a time where you hope it's a male. And that was the case here. With bloodlines from El Moustachio (accoyo) and Guellermo (alianza) coming together I was feverishly wishing for a boy and my wish was granted. He arrived by complete surprise in July 2009 whereas we weren't expecting him until September - not premature, but the product of an intial breeding that lasted only seconds and was deemed unsuccessful.
His fiber, which was shorn at the age of just 6 days, was an unusual colour, white with a golden hue. And so soft that I could compare it with my satin angora rabbits. Later I discovered that on the back of each ear, against the base, he has a small fawn spot about the size of a dime. Although he is pure white, he is carrying colour (from moms' side).
Due to his white colouring and his velvety soft fiber, we named him after the white haired, velvet-cloaked Marius de Romano from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles.
